HISTORY
Dr Kobus du Toit, a wildlife
veterinarian and his colleague Dr Johan Oosthuyse decided to
breed an ideal Lowveld buffalo bull
and to create a African Buffalo Guild. Kobus
approached
Werner Booysen a forensic data analyst
and business owner with an interest in
Multi Omics, Pharmacology and CAPE
BUFFALO to
create the website.

Historical background of Tuberculosis
and CAPE BUFFALO
The history of tuberculosis in the Kruger
National Park must first be understood to appreciate
the breeding of disease-free buffalo.
Tuberculosis was first diagnosed in the Kruger National
positive case in buffalo was diagnosed
at Pafuri Bridge. Considering the history of
tuberculosis
in commercial cattle in the Mpumalanga
Lowveld, the conclusion can be made that the disease
entered the Kruger National Park
towards the end of the 1950’s from the Crocodile Bridge area
and took half a century to spread
through the Kruger Park. In the late 1990’s Kobus had the
vision to protect the Kruger Buffalo
Genetics with the outbreak of tuberculosis in the Kruger
National Park. On 14 June 1996 he sent
his first letter to Dr Anthony Hall-Martin to start the
negotiations for breeding disease-free
buffalo. After several meetings he made the following
proposal in a letter to Dr Hall-Martin
on 24 February 1997;
Dear Dr Hall Martin,
I refer to our conversation of 11 June
1996.
I want to establish a
tuberculosis-free buffalo herd in the Lowveld behind the red line. I also
want to develop an AI-station for
buffalo bulls to conserve a genetic bank of superior material.
The above-mentioned herd will be a
closed herd to keep it “disease free.”
For the selection of material, I need
60 adult buffalo bulls and 50 adult buffalo cows. I herewith
make the National Parks Board an offer
of one million rand for the 110 animals (VAT excluded).
Thank you for considering this project
on a conservation basis.
Yours sincerely,
J.G. du Toit
On 8 May 1997 he received the
following letter from Dr Hall-Martin;
Dear Dr Du Toit
DISEASE-FREE BUFFALO PROJECT
I refer to our discussions and the
intention of National Parks Board to create a population of
disease-free buffalo by removing
animals from the Kruger National Park. I also refer to your
offer dated 24 February 1997 to
purchase TG-tested buffalo from the Kruger National Park to
develop an AI station for buffalo
bulls.
Attached please find the sale
agreement between National Parks Board and yourself, duly
signed and witnessed. I look forward
to the full implementation of the project and I suggest that
for all practical arrangements the
contact person from my side would be Dr Douw Grobler at
Skukuza.
With all good wishes,
Yours sincerely
Anthony Hall-Martin
He wrote the protocol to use diseased
buffalo to breed disease free buffalo (free from foot and
mouth disease, brucellosis,
tuberculosis and corridor disease). There were 18 projects
registered for 10 years and more than
6000 animals were bred from these projects.
Kobus (Mokwalo)
and National Parks were the first registered breeders.
